“I Want a Wife” Judy Brady

1. Review all of the characteristics of a wife that Brady mentions. Write a one-sentence definition of the word wife that summarizes all of these characteristics.

2. How is Brady’s definition of wife like and unlike your own?

3. What main idea do you think Brady wants to communicate to her readers? Does she ever actually state this idea? If not, do you think she should?

4. Brady ends her essay with a rhetorical question, a question readers are not expected to answer. Is this an effective concluding strategy? Why or why not?

5. Brady develops her definition of wife with examples. What are some of her most important examples? How do those examples help the reader understand the idea of wife?

6. Brady’s essay was written in 1971. Does her definition of wife seem dated, or does it seem accurate (at least in some respects) to you? How so, or how not
