Criminology 410 First Project: You are a patrol officer, a sworn officer, whose responsibility and job requires you to conduct initial investigations of crimes in your Jurisdiction London (Bogus) County, Virginia You are called to the residence of a very wealthy family in London county, 12345 Mockingbird Lane Donald Virginia. The residence is large two story single family home with a brick fa?ade. The house appears to be well over 5,000 square feet with a swimming pool and a detached carriage house. It is positioned on the rural estate on the corner of Mockingbird Lane and Robins Nest Way. The house appears to be the only residence on a 5 acre plot of land. There are other smaller buildings adjacent to the main house that appear to be maintenance buildings for the main house. You arrive at the location with your partner Officer John Smith at 8:00 AM. As you are walking to the front entrance you notice a woman, who appears to be a maid or housekeeper depositing a parcel of material wrapped in a bed sheet in the trash bin on the side of the residence. You knock on the door and you are met by the same woman who appears to have hustled from the service door for the trash bin area to answer the front door. The Woman introduces herself as Mrs. Dawson, housekeeper for the Benson family. She explains that she has called you to the home of the Bensons, because when she got to work this morning at 7:00 AM she was doing her normal morning assessment and found The Bensons eight year old daughter Melissa on a couch in the basement play room. Little Melissa appeared to be dead but Mrs. Dawson has also called the County EMT ambulance, who she said should also be on their way. You and your partner are then escorted down one flight of stairs to a large open basement room with a bar, an entertainment center, a pool table and other recreational games and facilities. The room is also accessed by a large French door, which is standing open to very large stone deck and swimming pool area. You then see the child laying on large bath towel. She looks very pale and there is no sign of life (breathing etc.) You immediately carefully check for a pulse and realize that her body is cold to the touch. Almost immediately you hear a siren from an approaching Ambulance. Then the County EMTs arrive and they are also escorted to the basement room and begin their examination. They conclude the child is in fact dead and there is nothing they can do for her. You then contact your radio dispatcher and advise her to send the county medical examiner for a deceased person at the address. You also ask her to dispatch a Crime Scene examination team and a homicide detective. You know from experience it will be several hours before those elements arrive at your location. You then look over the childs body and begin to document what you can see. There are numerous bruise marks and what appears to be open gashes to the head of the victim. The towel on which she is lying is stained with dried blood. There is also a ligature style bruise around the childs neck. It is clear to you that she was killed and is the victim of homicide. At this point the only person available to you for obtaining information is the house keeper, so you begin to ask her about the child. When was she last seen? Who else is in the house?, Did she know anything about what happened? The housekeeper becomes very flustered and begins to cry. The only thing she knows is her employers the Bensons are upstairs with their lawyer. They told her to escort the police and the EMTs to the girls body. They told her the child was kidnapped yesterday and the family on the advice of their attorney will not answer questions, because they are so devastated by the loss of their daughter. They said their attorney notified the Chief of Police about the Kidnapping last evening, but they dont know who could have done such a terrible thing. According to her employers the childs body must have been left on the couch as it is seen now, by the kidnappers, who are unknown to the Bensons. The door must have been left open by the kidnappers, so the Bensons expect that any evidence relating to the crime should be left in the play room and on the patio door. You and your partner are then confronted by a man, who identifies himself as the attorney for the Benson family he provides his name as John Martin. He tells you that you will not be allowed to talk to his clients and the family wishes that you will expedite your disruption of their household. He tells you that the child was kidnapped yesterday by a person or persons unknown to the Bensons. You then ask if you can bring the crime scene unit to the childs bedroom and you are told that the only room you are allowed to access is the play room and the immediate area outside on the patio. You then ask is there anyone else in the house. Attorney Martin says that is information he will not share with you. He says the Bensons want to maintain their privacy during this horrible time and they will not allow themselves or their family to subjected to rumor and innuendo.
