Genre, Change and Effects. For this assessment, students are required to produce an essay of 2000 words in length. In this essay, students will select a film genre of their choice and examine its development, paying particular attention to the use of visual effects within this genre. Students may select any genre: for example, science fiction, the historical epic, the horror film, fantasy cinema, the Western, the crime film, the war movie). Students will be expected to evidence an awareness of concepts surrounding the issue of genre, the history and development of their chosen genre, and detailed analysis of notable films from within the genre. Students should consider the role of effects in defining the ‘outer form’ of the genre, and the possible impact of developments within effects work on the ‘inner form’ (or themes) of the genre. Students should consider the relationship between their chosen genre and its cultural context, examining how the genre (and especially its use of visual effects) has been informed by cultural change.
